Albert Shih, Professor, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Co-Director, Wu

Manufacturing Research Center, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. After receiving his

PhD from Purdue University in 1991, Dr. Shih worked at Cummins Inc. at Columbus, Indiana

for 7 years.  He developed cost-effective precision machining processes for advanced

engineering materials.  From 1998 to 2002, he was Associate Professor in Mechanical and

Aerospace Engineering Department, North Carolina State University at Raleigh, North

Carolina.  In January 2003, Dr. Shih joined University of Michigan?s Mechanical

Engineering and Wu Manufacturing Research Center.

Currently, Professor Shih's research and teaching focus are in biomedical design and

manufacturing ? the application of advanced design and manufacturing technology to

advance medical device, healthcare operations, and patient safety.  He works closely with

collaborators in the Medical School and is a founding member of the Medical Innovation

Center.  He continues to conduct research in machining of advanced materials, non-contact

optical metrology, friction stir joining, and precision machine design.

Professor Shih is an ASME Fellow and the recipient of 1999 ASME BOSS Award, 2000 NSF

CAREER Award and 2004 SAE Ralph Teetor Education Award.  He was the associate editor of

ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering and served as the guest editor for

the special issue of Biomedical Manufacturing in 2008.  He also served in the Scientific

Committee of NAMRI/SME and the review committee of International Journal of Machine Tools

and Manufacture.  He has 5 US patents and over 180 publications, including over 100
