General Overview

Goals for advanced machining research are to improve the accuracy, productivity, flexibility, and reliability of different machining processes and associated machine tools, cutting tools, and fixtures. A few of the general thrust areas in advanced machining include: 

  • Minimum quantity lubrication machining 
  • Electrical discharge machining (EDM) 
  • Error compensation in machining 
  • Drill research 
  • High performance machining 
  • Friction stir processes 
  • Biomachining: Nano-scale, biologically-based machining of metal
